Painting & Decorating – Five Questions to Ask Before You Hire

If you appreciate the difference professional painting and decorating can make to your home, there are a number of things you should consider when hiring someone or a local company to do the work for you. Listed below are five questions that are worthwhile asking to make sure you get a professional job done right first time.

Can I see examples of your previous work?

If the painting and decorating companies you’re looking to hire have websites, there may be a gallery of their work on there for you to look at. Some firms don’t have any online presence, but you should still ask to see examples of what they’ve done. Even if you’ve been recommended a specific form of painter & decorators by someone you know, it’s still wise to see their work, as people have different standards and your project may be more complex than the work they had done.

Are you insured?

If you’re going to let painters & decorators into your home, you’ll want to make sure they’re properly insured. For example, if some paint is spilt on your carpet, will you have to pick up the bill or will it be covered by the firm’s insurance policy? It’s not just things like spillages that need to be covered, other things such as accidental damage to furniture when it’s being moved can easily happen.

Can you supply me with references/testimonials?

While you will get a good idea of how good a painting and decorating company is by looking at examples of their work, references and testimonials can provide you with more information. If an individual or company is reluctant to supply you with any references or comments from previous clients, it could be a sign that they don’t have any positive ones to show you.

How long will the project take?

If you agree to hire someone to do your painting and decorating, you’ll want to make sure any disruption in your home is kept to a minimum. If you don’t get an agreed duration and completion date in writing, you may find your project goes on for a lot longer than you originally thought.

When do I have to pay?

If you ask this question and are asked for all the money up front, then you should think twice about using that painter & decorator or firm. For example, what would happen if the job is completed and you’re not happy with it? It’s going to be very difficult to get your money back if you’ve already paid in full. Some painting and decorating companies will ask for a deposit with the balance on completion, and others will only ask for payment once the job has been done to your complete satisfaction. If you do pay a deposit, make sure you get a written receipt.
